Apple posted record quarterly revenue and Mac sales for Q3 of 2010

Apple announced the highest quarterly revenue ever for any financial quarter in its history during the third quarter (Q3) of 2010. Earnings per share (EPS) of $3.51 for Q3 of 2010 exceeded the consensus estimate of Wall Street analysts by nearly 13%. Revenue was $15.7 billion with a net quarterly profit of over $3.2 billion, which represents fantastic increases over the Q3 of 2009 of 61 percent and 78 percent respectively. Gross margin was down a bit to 39 percent from nearly 41 percent last year.

Apple's cash on hand grew to $45 billion, up by $4 billion during Q3 of 2010.

Mac sales were up 33 percent again to nearly 3.5 million (a new quarterly record), iPhone sales were up 61 percent to 8.4 million and iPod sales were down 8 percent to 9.4 million, all as compared with the third quarter of 2009. Apple began selling iPads in Q3 and sold 3.7 million of them. Apple also began selling the iPhone 4 and is selling all that they can make. The Mac's growth rate of 33% exceeded the growth of the PC market as a whole of 22%, resulting in Apple's market share continuing to improve.

This quarter the portable unit Mac sales increase of 41 percent exceeded the desktop unit sales increase of 18 percent, returning to the Mac type sales performance where portables lead. Apple updated the MacBook Pro portables in April which caused this.

All of Apple's four regional operating segments (Americas, Europe, Japan and Asia Pacific) scored increased unit sales and revenue over the same quarter in 2009, averaging 33 percent in unit sales and 61 percent in revenue. Apple's retail stores also had increases in unit sales and revenue of 38 percent and 73 percent respectively.

Apple's forecast for the next quarter's revenue is a record of about $18 billion with earnings per share of about $3.44. Apple's forecasts have been quite conservative in the past. [Bill Fox]
