Early Mac OS 8 Impressions
Early Mac OS 8 Impressions: Late yesterday afternoon and last night I installed Mac OS 8 on my 8500/120 and PowerBook 3400/180. The installation went pretty smoothly on both machines. My observations and installation notes are contained on my Mac OS 8 page. Installation on my other Macs: 7100/80, Quadra 605 and PowerBase 180 will have to wait until I receive my personal version, hopefully next week.
Unfortunately, the first note was sent after midnight EDT on 7/16 and the second at 3am so I missed posting the info yesterday. You can get the Public Preview Release of the BeOS with MacUser magazine's October issue (available 8/25) or from Be's booth at the Boston Macworld Expo absolutely free but no further upgrades. For $49 from Be's web site, you can get the PR and two additional upgrades, a real deal if the BeOS takes off. There is also a $10 trial pack from Be. I've done a lot of fooling around with the previous limited releases and I think everyone with a PowerPC CPU that can use the BeOS will love it. This is the best Mac OS that I've tried so far. It's slick and fast but needs more applications. Hopefully, those will now come.
FLASH!! Mac OS 8 arrived today, a 1-day early birthday present! Apparently, enterprise site licensees are first on the list along with the education channel. I've installed it on my work 8500/120 and will later do so on my PowerBook 3400/180. Return here tomorrow for my installation comments and an update to my Mac OS 8 page.
