PowerBook 3400c's internal modem
Problems with the PowerBook 3400c's internal modem are still being posted to the Portables section of Apple's Technical Support Online site. People using OT/PPP 1.0 report having difficulty making and keeping internet connections with the Asante-made modem and, when the connection is lost, having to reboot in order to redial. The Apple Support suggestion is to download and use FreePPP 2.5v2 (with the modem init string set at AT&FW2) intead of OT/PPP. [Reader Jim Stoneburner notes that the latest version is 2.5v3.] The claim is that there is a bug in the OT/PPP modem script. Curiously, I've had no problems with OT/PPP since receiving a PowerBook 3400/180 a couple of months ago. My problem has been that applications like ccMail Remote and CompuServe MacCIM 2.4.4 that use the Apple Modem Tool (v1.5.6 or earlier) can't access the internal modem. I've been forced to use a PC card (USR Megahertz CruiseCard XJA3288)--it also works fine with OT/PPP 1.0.
