CompUSA/Apple SWAS Grand Opening Readers' Report

After reading through very many e-mail reports from Macs Only! readers, I am very disappointed in the effort. The celebration gamut ranged from CompUSA stores not even being aware that there was a national Grand Opening Celebration to two volunteers (some say white shirted and some say black--I saw white) answering questions to some demos and t-shirt drawings to free gifts like "Think different." coffee mugs. The responses, as one might expect, were clustered more at the minimalist end. Many did report seeing Apple sales, some heavy, and virtually all were happy that there was at least someone in the Apple store. Most said the celebration generated much larger crowds in the Apple area than they had seen before. Let's hope this was not a one-time, flash-in-he-pan effort that I fear it was. Unless anyone writes and objects or already has, I'm going to sent the whole bunch to my contacts at Apple. Connectix is shipping Virtual PC 2.0 according to their press release.

MacFixIt 3/16 carried another workaround script DSDP Fixer for the double shut down problem. However, as reader Bill Elgin points out, the DSDP is a result of crashes writing temporary files. These crashes can be doing no good to the system or finder file. He has gone back to Mac OS 8.0. I will continue to use Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0a instead of Netscape Communicator 4.0.4.1 since IE4 does not cause DSDP on my Macs.

According to NEWS.COM, Professor Lawrence Lessig the Special Master in the Microsoft case was leaning against Microsoft in an 11-page letter to the Justice Department before his involvement was temporartily set aside by an appeals court ruling.
