AppleShare IP v6.2 Out
From Apple's press release, "Apple Computer, Inc.
released AppleShare IP 6.2, the latest version of the Company's
integrated file, print, web and mail server software suite. Optimized
for Apple's just released Mac OS 8.6 operating system upgrade,
AppleShare IP 6.2 allows users to transfer files twice as fast as
Windows NT; introduces central management of user information
through a new Shared Users & Groups feature; and extends support for
Sherlock, Apple's ground-breaking search technology. In AppleShare
IP 6.2, enhanced Sherlock capabilities allow indexing and 'search by
content' of shared folders and web sites hosted on AppleShare servers." Purchasing details are
available at Apple's AppleShare web site. [Those who bought 6.1/6.1.1 after April 19th can upgrade for $20 but earlier purchasers only get 0-67 percent off the $499 (10), $999 (50) or $1499 (unlimited) price as do those with 4.x,5.x and 6.0. From ASIP listserver messages, those waiting for a major bug fix to 6.1 and 6.1.1 are REALLY unhappy about having to shell out another $499 for 6.2 even though 6.2 adds some significant functionality. More unfortunate "tough love" from Apple. Looking ahead, however, Apple will merge ASIP with Mac OS X Server by the end of the year as I posted on 4/28 straight from Ernie Prabhakar, Apple's OSX Server Product Manager.-- Bill]
