Getting Mac OS 9

It's still a month or more until the release of Mac OS 9 but Apple, as we pointed out last Friday, and some resellers are already taking orders. Readers who own Mac OS 8.5 wonder if Apple will provide a special upgrade price. Apple has not yet mentioned an upgrade price, only the full $99 price. However, Apple has done so for each of the recent full-price upgrades. I expect that Apple will do so again, maybe for $69 or even less. Apple has also maintained the Mac OS Up-to-Date program for all recent non-free upgrades. This program permitted those who bought a Mac which didn't have the latest OS or if a new one came out within 30 days to upgrade for basically a shipping and handling fee. Dana Baggett pointed out that the US Mac OS Up-to-Date page has been taken down in the US but it is still up elsewhere like the South Africa server. It is probably moot since no Mac has shipped in the US with Mac OS 8.0/8.1 for a very long time. I suspect that we will see the US page up again as we near the Mac OS 9 release date.
