Power Mac G4/400 "Yikes" Benchmarks
-- Weekend, Sept. 11-12, 1999 --
Hands-On Report-- CVGS and Final Fantasy VIII:
Beyond these bugs the game seemed promising, although some sound effects
and music (particularly in the prelude) were badly modulated, and the "world map" mode
was pretty choppy. The game was tested in CVGS 1.2 on a Rev/A iMac, 233 MHz, with
96 MB of RAM, virtual memory off.
Bad news for CVGS fans: The year's most anticipated PlayStation game,
Final Fantasy VIII does not work with Connectix Virtual Game Station,
the PlayStation-for-Macintosh emulator.
After serveral hours of testing, CVGS
Watch Editor Chris Adamson judged the game unplayable under CVGS. The
main problem is the total absence of status bars and action menus in the
battle sequences -- without them, it's essentially impossible to know what
you're doing. The game also locked up twice in battle sequences, each time
after (finally) drawing the status bars at lower right, as seen in these screen shots:
