TechTool Pro 2.5.1 Updater Issues
I've had problems installing TTP 2.5.1. To install it I had to completely trash v2.1.1 and reinstall v2.1.1 to get the updater to work. Reader Jean Detheux reported that he had similar problems but was able to get the updater to work after dragging and dropping the new Protection files on the System Folder rather than manually trashing the old and copying in the new. This didn't work for me. Even after getting TTP 2.5.1 to install, I've had problems with the Protection Control Panel. When opened it asks me for my name and serial number but when I enter them it gives me an error message that the serial number is already in use. When I launched the application it asked me for the same information and afterwards it launches and runs just fine. However, opening the Protection CP still asks for my serial number and gives me the same error message. After several more trash and reinstalls, the problem went away. There is also an issue with certain copyright protected programs. MacFixit posted a copy protection workaround.
On the positive side, it now quickly checks your system for problems after each startup and the shutdown protection activity is very fast.
The new Trash Cache feature startled me at first as I suddenly began losing vast quantities of my available disk space. At first I thought the drive was about to go out so I backed up my main drive to reinitialize it. Then I thought that with all the email and downloading that I do, trashing the old files could add up fast. Sure enough, Trash Cache had cached 869 MB in a couple of days taking up nearly all the free space on my drive. I trashed the invisible file after making it visible and set the Trash Cache parameters to hold no more than 200 MB.
