Virtual PC 3.0 Update Installation

at Macs Only! was not without problems. Fortunately, each problem was easily overcome. I hope our experience was unusual but in case it is not, here's what happened. Clicked on the .smi and read the ReadMe file. It stated that VPC should be in the normal shutdown state and not a saved state. I never do that but I opened VPC v2.1.3 on my B&W's hard drive, shut it down normally and then ran the updater. When it was done updating, the registration sequence was followed which needed the old VPC 2.0 serial number so be sure to have that at hand.Then the first problem occurred. On launching VPC 3.0, I got an error message saying that the PC couldn't recover the saved state which sent me to DOS requiring a boot floppy in drive [A]. This problem was solved by trashing the VPC 3.0 Preferences folder in the Preferences Folder of the System Folder and relaunching VPC 3.0. This required the Windows 95 CD to be in the B&W's CD drive as the instructions state. However, when VPC 3.0 finished updating from the CD and launching, the file "vpc3add.exe" was not on the Windows 95 desktop as the instructions said it would be. The file is in the Extras folder in the VPC 3.0 folder. This problem was solved by making the "Extras" folder a Shared folder (made it the G: drive) with Preferences under the Edit menu. Then the G: drive was opened from "My Computer" and the file VPC3ADD.EXE was dragged to the desktop thereby creating a shortcut. Clicking the shortcut executed the file and installed all of the VPC 3.0 Additions. That's it. There may be two reasons the problems. First, VPC is run from a drive that is different from the startup drive containing the Mac OS 8.6 System Folder. Second, there are several copies of VPC on different mounted drives.
