Warning! Adobe Type Manager 4.5 Problems
Adobe has discovered the ATM 4.5 problem that is causing two different manifestations of problems that people are seeing [with Mac OS 8.5 and 8.6]: 1) Fonts are looking strange on screen in Quark XPress (but printing OK) at various zooming magnifications. 2) Fonts printing incorrectly to inkjet printers. Both of these issues are caused by the same problem within ATM 4.5. A code change will need to be made to ATM in order to ultimately fix these problems.
WORKAROUNDS
Problem 1
For fonts looking strange in Quark, we've found that the problem only occurs if the text has artificial small caps applied to it or if the text is artificially extended or contracted.
Workaround for Problem 1
* Use a font with true small caps, or don't apply the artificial extending/compacting styles to the font OR
* Select a magnification where the problem does not occur
OR
* Use a version of ATM earlier than 4.5
> OR
* Use a version of the Mac OS earlier than 8.5
Problem 2
When printing to an inkjet printer, fonts print too small, or with extra space between the letters and words. This will only happen at certain sizes of fonts, and not for all fonts.
Workaround for Problem 2
* Print to a PostScript printer
OR
* Use a version of ATM prior to 4.5
OR
* Change the font to a font that does not have the problem
OR
* Use a size of the font where the problem does not occur
