Carbon provides developers with a smooth transition from Mac OS 9 to Mac OS X. When run on Mac OS X, a Carbon application gets the benefit of the modern Carbon application programming interface as well as many features of the Darwin core OS, including protected memory for crash-resistant computing and pre-emptive multitasking for a more responsive system.
