Follow Up 2--Flashing the LINKSYS 1-Port Cable/DSL Router's Firmware
I first tried using the Java method with Apple's Applet Runner by setting the preferences to unrestricted and entering http://192.168.1.1/Upgrade.htm. In the ensuing window (upgrade page), I entered the router's password, selected "code.bin" (the firmware file from the firmware upgrade .zip folder downloaded from LINKSYS) and clicked the "Upgrade" button. For some reason, the upload process quit with an "unknown error". I tried it a couple of times more wondering why I had decided to do this at such a late hour but it wouldn't even start uploading. I rebooted the router and got a dreaded "diag" red light that didn't stop flashing--the router no longer worked. I tried a reset with the same result. I tried to go through the flash routine again but Apple Runner returned a message that it couldn't find the upgrade page. In reading the manual and documents that came with the updater they seemed to imply that I needed a static IP address in TCP/IP on the computer upgrading the router's firmware--mine was set at Using DHCP, of course. Setting TCP/IP to Manual, entering the IP address manually and trying to upgrade didn't work at that point as the upgrade page could be found. The router's firmware was already too screwed up.
Fortunately, I had previously downloaded Kem Tekinay's MacTFTP Client. I launched it, entered the router's password, the router's IP address, selected code.bin and clicked the "Start" button. The router's firmware was quickly upgraded to v1.34 and after a reboot the router was back in business. Whew!
I don't know what went wrong with the Applet Runner method. Perhaps it was the DHCP vs static IP address issue, which is not mentioned in Tim Higgins' instructions, or some other fluke. Did I learn a lesson? I certainly hope so. Anyway, the router works as well as it did before the firmware upgrade.
