Follow Up 2 -- Microtech USB XpressSCSI

On July 10th we posted a Hands-On Report on Microtech's USB to SCSI converter. We noted that it worked fine with our PowerBook 2400c in SCSI Disk Mode and our SyQuest SyJet removable media drive. Several readers wrote that it didn't work with a number of devices requiring a terminator and chains were problematic. We had a chance to try XpressSCSI with a non-terminated hard drive with an external terminator. The XpressSCSI converter worked fine. The hard drive showed up on the desktop of our PowerBook G3 (FireWire) when the XpressSCSI's USB plug was hot-plugged into the PowerBook's USB port. The drive, however, acted like a shared drive over AppleTalk. It can't be erased, formatted or renamed. As noted before, it also can not serve as a boot drive. I haven't tried a SCSI chain or a scanner yet. One day, I'll get my SCSI scanner (UMAX 1200S) working again and try it.
