From the Dark Side--Microsoft Proposes Remedy

for its antitrust convictions today unless a time extension is requested and granted. Microsoft's proposed remedy is rumored to be modest and "backward-looking", i.e. designed to deal somewhat with the past transgressions on which it was convicted. The Justice Department and the States proposed a remedy, splitting off the Windows operating systems into a separate company, that is "forward-looking", i.e. designed to prevent the kind of illegal monopolistic behavior that Microsoft was convicted of from recurring.
