TechTool Pro 3.0
"TechTool Pro allows users to test and repair their Macintosh computer with a few clicks of the mouse. Recently rated by MacAddict magazine as one of the ten "must-have" programs, TechTool Pro offers the most comprehensive suite of troubleshooting utilities available. The program was the first public Macintosh diagnostic utility available and was also the first to introduce an HFS+ compatible disk repair utility.
"Version 3 adds two important new features to the suite virus detection/repair and software conflict detection. The program also sports a new interface, which will make using the program much easier without overwhelming new users. There are also many improvements to the existing repair routines, as well as notable improvements in key features like optimization and system file analysis.
* New Virus Feature
"The program's new virus detection feature contains the routines necessary to find and repair all major code-based Macintosh viruses and Trojan Horses. A future free update will add the ability to detect and/or repair macro viruses. The virus utilities are contained in both the main TechTool Pro application as well as within the TechTool Protection control panel set. Users can selectively scan their volumes at scheduled times or only when needed. The program can also be configured to check entire volumes or only new files. The new virus feature employs a passive design that does not interfere with the user's work nor is continuously complaining about innocuous system activities. The program utilizes a virus database file that can be replaced when new virus definitions are released. Micromat expects to release updates on a quarterly basis, but will release virus updates more frequently if new viruses warrant more frequent releases.
* New Software Conflict Feature
"Another addition to TechTool Pro's test suite is the ability to detect software conflicts. The program utilizes a large database of known software conflicts. When the program scans the user's drive(s), it compares the contents of the drives to the database. If a conflict is discovered, the conflict is documented in the final report which also contains hot links to the manufacturer's sites. Like the virus database, Micromat will release regular updates to the conflict database.
* Repair Updates
"A multitude of low-level diagnostic and repair routines have been added to the program's volume structure suite. TechTool Pro 3 is capable of solving many more drive problems than the proceeding version. The new and existing routines have also been optimized so that the detection and repair of problems takes less time than before.The Data Recovery panel has also been improved dramatically. Besides enhancing many aspects of the interface, Micromat has added a new file scavenge routine allowing users to recover more data in the event of a severe drive crash.
* Compatibility
"TechTool Pro 3 is compatible with a wide range of new-generation devices, interfaces and systems. The program will work with FireWire drives, USB removable drives (like those from Imation and Newer Technology), the latest Macintosh models and is compatible with System 9.0.4.

"TechTool Pro 3 requires a Macintosh II or above, a color monitor, System software version 7.5.5 or better, a CD or DVD ROM/RAM drive and a minimum of 10 megabytes of RAM. Version 3 is scheduled to ship July 29th, 2000. Registered owners of version 2 can upgrade to version 3 for $49.95 plus shipping and handling and tax if applicable.
