NVIDIA GeForce2 MX ROM/Drivers Update 1.1.1--How to Do It

On Tuesday we noted that the updater was available from Apple's server. However, we also noted that the installer didn't work, a common problem. If you are intrepid, you can easily manually execute the update. We did it. No problems. Unfortunately, we found that there was absolutely no performance increase over using ROM v1017f1 and the v1.0.9 drivers that shipped with our Power Mac G4 533 DP using MacBench 5.0 Publishing Graphics, Quake III Arena v127, scrolling a 136 page PDF file or Cinebench 2000. Anyway, here's how:

First, use TomeViewer to extract the ROM update and seven extensions from the Tome file in Apple's updater. Then, remove the seven v1.0.9 NVIDIA extensions and place the seven new v1.1.1 extensions in the Extensions folder.

Open the AppleScript Script Editor found in your Apple Extras folder. Copy the following script to the window of the Script Editor:

    tell application "GeForce2MX AE Flasher-1027"
    CompareROMVersion
    if (CompareROMVersion) = true then
    FlashROM
    end if
    quit
    end tell

Click the "Run" button, navigate to the "GeForce2MX AE Flasher-1027" file and select it. The screen goes dark for 10-15 seconds. Finally, reboot. That's it. Still, this procedure is not for the faint of heart. If you are at all uneasy, wait for Apple to fix the installer script. [Peter Chin via MacNN Forums]
