HiPerWall--50 30" Apple Cinema Displays Make One Huge Display at UC Irvine
The University of California at Irvine created what they call the HiPerWall out of 50 30" Apple Cinema Displays. The HiPerWall is driven by 25 PowerMac G5s, each running two displays. The secret is in the UCI-developed software that splits images into 50 tiles. They used the 30" Apple Cinema displays because they have the highest resolution available, 2560x1600, nearly twice high definition TV.
Why did they do this?
"Medical imaging, climate data and satellite photography that could only be viewed partially or slice by slice can now be seen in detail on the big screen," said Falko Kuester, one of the system's designers and a UCI assistant professor of electrical engineering and computer science.
