ATI plans Radeon X1900 Graphics Card for Power Mac G5 (PCI-E)

The last Power Mac G5s had PCI-Express expansion slots and a special 16-channel graphics slot but no after-market graphics cards to improve their graphics performance from the base Nvidia GeForce 6600. One could get a faster Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT but only if one ordered it CTO with the Power Mac G5 since Apple never sold them separately as an after-market kit. We had a Power Mac G5 Quad (PCI-E) but we ordered it before the Nvidia GeForce 7800 GT was available thinking, of course, that we could always buy one later as a kit--wrong. So when we got our first MacBook Pro and it nearly matched our Power Mac G5 Quad's graphics performance we sold the Quad.

Soon owners of Power Mac G5 (PCI-E)'s will be able to buy a near top-of-the-line ATI Radeon X1900 G5 Mac Edition according to a new ATI Web page. The specs appear to be the same as those for the ATI Radeon X1900 offered with the Mac Pro except that it will have 256MB vs 512MB of video RAM. [Bill Fox]
