Brief Hands-On Report--Apple Security Update 2006-007 is Out

Apple released Security Update 2006-007 and it is available for download via Software Update or as a stand-alone updater from this Apple Web page. The update is for Mac OS X 10.4.8 or 10.3.9 running on Intel-based Macs or PowerPC-based Macs and as client or server editions.

According to Apple,

Security Update 2006-007 is recommended for all users and improves the security of the following components [Intel-based client version]:

AirPort
ATS
CFNetwork
Finder
Font Book
Font Importer
Installer
OpenSSL
PHP
PPP
Samba
Security Framework
VPN
WebKit
gnuzip
perl

The details are extensive and are listed on this Apple Web page. It is unclear if the recent adware, AppleTalk and disk image vulnerabilities are corrected by this update--we hope so.

We downloaded the Security Update 2006-007 via Software Update and applied it to a number of Macs, including: Intel-based Mac mini, MacBook Pro C2D, 24" iMac C2D and 20" iMac CD plus PowerPC-based PowerMac G4 Cube and 12" PowerBook G4--all run Mac OS X 10.4.8 and one runs the server edition. Except for the restart taking somewhat longer than normal, we encountered no negative effects from the update. [Bill Fox & Dana Baggett]
