The :-) Emoticon turned 25 Yesterday

Professor Scott E. Fahlman of Carnegie Mellon University is credited with the invention of text-based emoticons some 25 years ago when the Internet was in its infancy. The first was the :-) smiley face emoticon to signal sarcasm or cynicism in a comment in order to prevent an inappropriate direct response, usually an off-base diatribe instead of amore appropriate ROFL or a more recent LMAO.
