All web sites are ballyhooing MacCPU's new prices for its NewerTECH MAXPowr CPU cards, i.e. $499 for a 180 MHz 604e and $579 for a 200 MHz model afetr a $150 rebate for your old card. These prices are finally below the cost of a complete computer and are getting really attractive. Clearly, the big speed winners are those who bought 7500's and who thought they were losers as a result of all the L2 cache and other problems.

Reader Jim Stoneburner wrote back that his startup freezes (after the menu bar appears and the cursor is in the upper-left corner) have returned against all odds so MacsBug 6.5.4a3 is not the problem. He uses Mac OS 7.5.5 on a PowerCenter 604/150. Jim (and I) apologize for the "false alarm" -- and is (are) pondering the ramifications of imposing self-flagellation with a parallel port cable. Jim has redoubled his efforts to find a solution and will report when he's certain that he's found it. Thanks, Jim!
