Yesterday, my mail was heavily dominated by the "...Apple can take a flying leap. I'm buying a Wintel..." perspective, calling Steve Jobs worse words than the "...crazy..." used on MacInTouch (9/3). One might have expected a strong emotional reaction from many macheads but I am astounded. PowerComputing made its business decision that it couldn't make money at Apple's asking price for an extended Mac OS license, sold its Mac assets to Apple for a bundle and is turning to the Wintel market--what's wrong with this? While I lament the loss of Power, obviously, a lot of people simply don't believe that Apple asked a fair price but rather asked an exorbitant price to purposefully kill Power, will do the same thing to UMAX and Motorola next year, become totally introspective, price their computers out of reach and shrivel up and die. Apple is a public company and it is hard to lie to shareholders and not end up losing your fortune, so I'm going with Steve Jobs' assessment for the moment.

Regarding licensing CHRP, Apple is obliged to look at it from the perspective of an investor/shareholder. What I read is that the door is wide open if any cloners want to cover the true licensing costs and there are no takers--yet. The words "...have no plans..." mean almost anything so really mean nothing in the corporate/political speak that I am familiar with.
