Possible Mac OS 8--Copy to/from Floppy Issue

Well, against all hope it finally happened. I've had intermittantly a couple of freezes while trying to copy several selected files at a time between a floppy and my hard drive on my PowerBook 3400/180/CD. I've also been locked out of the floppy when trying to save an addition to a file in Word 6.01--I get a message saying it is locked when it isn't and it has happened with two different floppies. The only way out of both problems was to reboot. I've been unable to purposefully repeat either of these events. So far I have no suggestions on the cause but it may be related to the next issue and it may have nothing to do with Mac OS 8.
