PowerBase/Mac OS 7.6 Startup Freeze (Update)

As noted below on 5/29 the freeze with the mouse pointer in the screen's upper left occurred after the menu bar appeared but before the Control Strip appeared. Updating to Mac OS 7.6.1 cured the problem that resisted all the usual troubleshooting techniques (except a complete clean install of 7.6). Mac OS 7.6.1 updates the Control Strip control panel so a corrupted Control Strip may have been the culprit. This peculiar freeze has been reported rather widely, especially on MacFixIt.
