According to NEWS.COM, Apple will offer a sub-$2,000 PowerBook G3/233MHz.

Aarrghhh! That's terrific but what should one do? I love the much slower, light but not too small 2400/180 that's only $100-200 less and lacks a CD ROM drive.

Also according to NEWS.COM, Apple treated well the Newton OS developers who came to protest its demise. They certainly deserved as much, especially in light of the poor handling of the cancellation notice right or wrong. I hope this signals Apple's new way of doing business with its loyal supporters.

Apple re-released Apple Data Detectors Internet Address Detector v1.0.2 (1.9 MB). Its initial release was covered by Macs Only! on December 29th but it was withdrawn a day or so later because of problems with some of the components. Here's the Macs Only! 12/29/97 post:

"Apple posted Data Detectors v1.02. The detectors, an AppleScript project, currently available are Internet Addresses and U.S. Geography. Currency detectors will be available soon according to Apple's site. The Internet Detectors have been available for some time. The Geography Detectors are new and they provide maps and zip codes for cities in selected text."

The Geographic Detectors are still there and the Currency Detectors are still coming!

Apple also posted Apple 5500/6500 Video Input v1.0.7 extension.

Sonnet Technologies released Crescendo v1.0.3, an extension for the 604 CPU card for PowerMac 6100's. Dana Baggett reviewed an early version of this card for Macs Only!. [Thanks Dana Baggett and Version Tracker]

Dana Baggett pointed out that, according to TechWeb, CompUSA's stock is not doing so well in the stock market lately. For those Rip Van Winkle's out there, Apple has put all of its extra-large retailing eggs in CompUSA's basket.
