CompUSA's Sunday supplement ad for their weekend Apple-Store-Within-A-Store Grand Opening celebration arrived with Satur

day's Washington Post as usual. I'm sure the ad will be pretty much, if not exactly, the same all over the country. It's a disappointing 4-page pullout from the remaining 20 pages of Wintel stuff. Why disappointing?

• First, there is a major screw up right on the first page. The G3/233DT is shown as costing $2,649.93 with 2 discounts totaling $450 for a price of $2,199.93 with the usual parenthetical, (Monitor Sold Separately)! What, a $1,699.99 (at full retail list no less) G3/233DT for $2,199.93? If one reads the fine print, however, the $2,199.93 actually gets you the G3 plus a 15" monitor (what kind is not mentioned) and an Epson Stylus Color 600 printer.
• Second, there are not many special deals--the best are Myth for $29.99 (if you don't have it, that alone is worth the visit) and Sony 15" ($299.99) and ViewSonic 17" ($499.99) monitors. The computer prices are shown as discounts but they are really just Apple's new MAP's. The ad doesn't even show the $1,699.99 G3/233DT price leader, at least not at $1,699.99 as noted above.

Since there are lots of great deals on Wintel stuff, a lot of folks not exposed to the current Mac line up should be drawn to the store. However, I'm still not convinced that CompUSA has its heart or pocketbook in the project.

The latest Double Shut Down Problem workaround works for me! I've tried them all and the second version of Rob Giseburt's AppleScript shutdown script available from MacInTouch actually worked many times. After selecting "Shut Down" it places all items in the invisible Temporary Items folder into a desktop folder called "Temporary Crap" which is then placed in the Trash just before shutting down.
