Bill:

I use Enhance 4.0 all of the time.

It is a marvelous program that does not require the fastest Macs, or lots 
and lots of RAM like Photoshop, and the ability to use Photoshop plug-ins 
is a definite plus. Editing photos for the web is handled much easier 
than in Photoshop, as is adding text to an image. Believe it or not, you 
just select the text tool, drop in the cursor, and start typing.

Layers and transparencies work well, but are a little more cumbersome 
than in Photoshop.

JPEG works great, and the built in browser window is really cool.

Documentation is sparse, but concise.

For the price, it's hard to beat. I use it for technical manuals and 
patent documentation...I invent things for a living, and it's great. 
Factor in the upgrade price, $100 if you own ColorIt or an earlier 
version of Enhance, and it's a fantastic deal!

However, I have a few suggestions. If you just need a capable image 
editor for home use, and doesn't need layers, buy ColorIt 3.2.4. If you 
need a VERY capable image editor, with layers, transparencies, and would 
like the cool WildRiver SSK filter set, buy Enhance 4.0. If you need 
pre-press, or entertain ideas about working in the digital graphics 
field, pony up to the bar and buy Photoshop...it's so capable and 
complicated that you really need to use it as much as possible for 
experience. Enhance is much easier to learn...but Photoshop is where the 
money is.

All in all, I am a VERY satisfied owner.

Bill,

I use Enhance  (PPC 4.01) daily  (great companion to "Painter") and find it
very good. There were compatibility problems with my Umax scanner but they are
now resolved by using the MagicScan driver instead of the Vista line. (I also
has to let go of "Now WYSIWYG Menu" [surprising it worked that long] "Label
Secrets Pro" and "CameraMan" to have Enhance operate problem free.)

For people who have used Color It! it is very easy to move to Enhance as the
interface is almost identical.

My 9 year old daughter is now busy learning layers and masks and more as these
are new features in Enhance (she really knows her way around Color It! and is
enjoying the extra features Enhance makes possible).

We bought Enhance for a ridiculously low price ( it came with the full
WildRiverSSK filters) and I recommend it highly to anyone who needs something
just a tad less powerful than Photoshop but that comes at a fraction of the price.

It also uses a lot less RAM, and releases it after the job is done.

If you have specific questions about Enhance, I will be happy to answer them
(providing I know the answers of course).

I really enjoy your Macs Only! page and check it most everyday!  Thanks
for all your efforts!

I use Enhance, and over all I'd say it is a good program.  I am not
aware of a specific "pro" version beyond the "Enhance PPC" version 4.0.1
I'm using.

Having not personally used Photoshop (nor being a graphics expert), I
can't compare them directly, but Enhance "feels" like most of the
important features are there.  Basically, it seems like a "beefed-up"
ColorIt!.  Many Photoshop plug-ins work fine in Enhance.  I use Eye
Candy all the time without any problems.  And the recent Enhance updater
fixed a problem with Umax scanner plug-ins.  Enhance has a few quirks,
but then again, what program doesn't?
