Sunday night right after posting Monday's edition Macs Only!'s 3.2 GB main hard drive suddenly "lost" all of its free space (700+ MB) and could not be written to. The drive had been reformatted with Apple's new HFS+ extended format soon after Mac OS 8.1 came out. The 3.2 GB Quantum Stratus had run fine under HFS+ to that point. Rebuilding the Desktop File, zapping PRAM and checking for viruses did nothing--Strike 1. Disk First Aid v8.1 said the drive had a header b-tree error that could not be fixed by DFA--Strike 2. Norton Utilities Disk Doctor v3.5.2, which Symantec claims is compatible with HFS+, reported that it could not work because the drive was not HFS. Right, it was HFS+ but at least v3.5.2 did not screw up the hard drive further as v3.5.1 is reported to do--Strike 3. Resigned to an evening of work Monday, I used Drive Setup Lite on Mac OS 8.1's DiskTools to reformat the drive (yes, again as HFS+), reinstalled Mac OS 8.1 and copied all the backed-up files from my two SyJet cartridges (Panic briefly occurred when a freeze accompanied each attempt to copy the files until I remembered that I had to re-install the new HFS+ compliant SyJet driver). The lesson? Obviously, don't mess with HFS+ until a utility comes out that can fix hard drive problems or backup very frequently and be prepared for a lot of work.
