From a reader who wishes to remain anonymous,
"... Lotusphere '98 (Lotus' annual North American conference held at DisneyWorld) ... [had] ... some good news. Lotus has reversed its plans regarding development of a 5.x version of its "Notes Designer for Domino" software for the Mac, mainly due to an unexpected outcry for the product at the conference. Lotus developers are reportedly also "considering" a version of the Domino/Notes server for Rhapsody. This software is powerful stuff and I would encourage anybody developing for the web to check it out, and, of course, to encourage Lotus to port the server to Rhapsody."
From Connectix's Kathy Westergaard,
"TechWorks, Inc., a leading developer and manufacturer of Power3D, PowerCPU/G3, PowerRAM and other computer performance enhancement products and Connectix Corporation, maker of RAM Doubler and Speed Doubler, jointly announce Connectix Virtual PC 2.0, the leading PC emulation software, which will allow Mac gamers with TechWorks' Power3D graphics accelerator card to play 3Dfx enabled DOS and Windows95-based games. The combination of TechWorks' Power3D and Virtual PC 2.0 will enable gamers to experience Tomb Raider II, Star Wars: Shadows of the Empire, Andretti Racing and many other 3Dfx titles previously reserved for the PC market."This is great news for gamers.
Apple issued a press release yesterday confirming that the deal with CompUSA extended beyond just establishing the Apple store areas inside. "Apple's currently available hardware products will be phased out of Best Buy, Circuit City, Computer City, Office Max and Sears. These have been very important business relationships but we believe it's an important time to move away from them," added Mandich. While it's about time that Apple supported those supporting Apple and ditched the stores that displayed Macs like a bunch dusty, disheaveled and non-working crap, of course, many of them were CompUSAs! After a long time, there was actually a Mac 6500/250 advertised in CompUSA's last Sunday paper ad. However, reader reports of anti-Mac antics, like placing the Apple store behind ceiling-high racks, blocking the areas entrance with boxes of Wintel stuff and placing load displays of the Pentium II next to the Apple area, and the lack of knowledgeable sales staff still abound. I'm certainly not impressed yet.
Apple also reduced prices on PowerBooks and 6500's. My favorite, the very light PowerBook 2400c/180, now goes for $1,999! How tempting.
Reader Tom Mackie pointed out that my link to LibMotoSh "http://www.mot.com/SPS/PowerPC/library/fact_sheet/libmoto.html" no longer works. LibMotoSh is Motorola's math library extesion that significantly speeds up floating point calculations, particularly those involving trig functions. Does anyone have another URL for this valuable utility?
From Roberto Panetta, CronoTask 1.04 is out.
