Free PC Movement Doomed?

From Dana Baggett, "Lots of stories tonight on the www tonight about the Free PC movement, how it is changing the industry from a hardware to a 'service' orientation, how it is 'great' for beginners. etc. And why 'free' really isn't. The jury is still out on whether this is a fad or a sign of something more significant.

But, the plumber who installed my new water heater today gave me an "up close and personal" view of what is the Achilles Heel of the Free PC movement. He told me that he recently bought a $2,000 Aptiva PC - primarily for his 11 year old - but also because he aspires to get on the internet himself. But, he's not there yet. He just can't figure it out. He said 'I really need to set aside a half hour each night until I can master it. But, I haven't had the time.'

I decided not to tell him he should have bought an iMac. I hate to see a grown man cry. And he might not have believed me anyway. My son tells his work colleagues who own PCs - and complain about them bitterly - how easy the iMac is. Because he has Virtual PC, my son knows what life is like on the Dark Side. But, they don't (want to) believe him.

The Achilles Heel of the Free PC movement is the PC."
