"Internet Explorer 4.51-Outlook Express 5.01 Internet Update is comprised of a patch for Internet Explorer 4.5 and Outlook Express 5 for the Macintosh. This patch addresses the security issue where certain certificates, which provide user security, will expire at midnight on December 31, 1999. Accessing those security certificates after that date will generate an "expired certificate" warning. Also fixed is the security issue in Outlook Express 5, which makes it possible for a malicious sender to send an MHTML message to an Outlook Express 5 user, which would then automatically download a file to the users default Download folder without the Outlook Express 5 user's knowledge. This patch also includes updated libraries and increased JavaScript support for specific secure sites." However, if you want the Higher Encryption 128-bit version, it is available for download here (8.8 MB) instead.

The 128-bit updater upgraded my Outlook Express to v5.0.1 (1630) but Internet Explorer stayed at v4.5 (0408) according to the "About..." selection under the Apple Menu. I also tried the 40-bit updater with the same result. [Update: Joe DelPopolo wrote that he downloaded the full, combined IE 4.5.1 and OE 5.0.1 and IE is version 4.5.1 when installed. He then used the 128-bit updater. It is not clear if there are any actual changes to IE in v4.5.1 other than the updated security certificates. Joe wrote that the build number (0408) is the same for v4.5.1 and v4.5 so there is probably no other difference.--Bill]
