[Sat. 11:00a EDT] Getting Mac OS 9--Chapter 2: In last Monday's edition of Macs Only! [posted Sunday evening] we noted that Apple's Mac OS Up-To-Date Program page had been taken down for the US but not elsewhere and linked to an example for South Africa. Then on Thursday (9/16) MacInTouch posted [the note has now been deleted from the MacInTouch news archive--ed.] an anonymous note from a Fry's employee claiming to have talked to Apple and the program was alive. Late Friday [since moved to Saturday--ed.], MacInTouch referenced posts to Apple's Technical Exchange where individuals posting as Apple employees stated that the program had been suspended. A Friday MacWEEK article, citing a Macwelt interview quotes Apple Worldwide Marketing VP and DemoMaster Phil Schiller as saying that upgrade pricing for those who own Mac OS 8.5 and 8.6 is under consideration at Apple. Presumably, that statement covers those who get Mac OS 8.6 with an iBook, iMac, PowerBook or PowerMac purchased within 30 days of Mac OS 9's release, i.e. those who would have been covered by the Mac OS Up-To-Date Program which provided an upgrade for about $20. Previously, upgrading for others cost about $70.
