Mac OS 8.5 or 8.6 Stalling?

Do you have a problem where your Mac seems to take a timeout for up to 30 seconds, stalling as in a freeze and then resuming normalcy? You are not alone. The problem has been traced primarily to setting the TCP/IP control panel to Ethernet/Using DHCP, especially when not on an ethernet network. The issue and workarounds are covered extensively on MacFixIt 5/27.
