Here Comes USB 2.0, a FireWire Killer?
"Belkin Components today introduced its new USB 2.0 PCI Card (F5U220). Using the world's first USB 2.0 host controller LSI (PD720100) designed by NEC Corporation (NEC), Belkin becomes the first manufacturer to deliver the much-anticipated USB 2.0 technology to the marketplace. Geared toward computer users wishing to upgrade their PCs from the original USN 1.1 standard, or users without USB functionality on their PC, the Belkin USB 2.0 PCI Card offers a full 480 Mbps per card. At 40 times faster than the USB 1.1 standard, the new card opens the door to take advantage of next generation technologies. USB 2.0 compliant products like real time video cameras, scanners, audio devices and others will work more effectively with the higher speed of USB 2.0. The Belkin USB PCI Card will be ready to ship January 2001 and will have an MSRP of $69.99." Hopefully, FireWire will go to 800 Mbps real soon. [Business Wire].
