Macs Only's Friday GDC Report by Brian Nakamoto

The Game Developer's Conference in San Jose, California officially kicked off this Friday. Macs Only! has been bringing you coverage of the GDC since Apple began exhibiting at the conference in 1999.

"Bill, here are my notes from Friday's opening keynote with Bill Gates [Click here for Brian's report]. I typed it on Palm's new collapsible full size keyboard that is a cool new accessory if you have a Palm.

Tomorrow, Sony has a keynote so we'll see their reaction to the X-Box. They essentially have slightly over a year to dig in. Sega is screwed. Nintendo just delayed the Dolphin so they must be having cold sweats. Microsoft has proved that they can leverage their existing monopoly on the PC market to try to take over the game console/convergence device market. It's a shame that Apple was once again too early with this concept when they tried the Pippin years back.

My head is still spinning from seeing the latest from 3dfx get blown away by the latest from ATI. Then seeing the PlayStation 2 in action, which got blown away by the X-Box, blew that away. The level of affordable home entertainment that is upon us is incredible!

As for Apple, we'll see what they're up to on Sunday. The entire Apple related seminars are then. Otherwise, everybody is talking about the X-Box and Microsoft's new approach to global domination. The freaky feeling is that the X-Box is a good thing if you're a game developer and it's a good thing if youre a consumer who likes to play games. Somebody pinch me."
