More Internet Explorer 5.0 Notes

1. Web Page Display Issues Solved--Several readers wrote that they did not experience the web page display issues that I did and posted yesterday and Monday. I thought that was weird but another reader provided a tip that the problem might be caused by IE 5's default font size of 16, yes 16! I checked and mine was indeed set to 16 so I tried 14 and then 12 and, sure enough, 12 allowed the pages to be rendered perfectly. If you are experiencing this problem go to "Edit>Preferences>Language/Fonts" and reset the font size to 12.

2. Printing Issue -- Dick Chanslor wrote, "I cannot print anything from IE 5. Clicking Print from the print dialog produces endlessly spinning watch hands. Force Quit from IE 5 is required to recover. Using Epson SC 850 driver version 5.54E, which still works fine with IE 4.5. Using a G3/266, OS 8.6." Unfortunately, I can't confirm this issue since I am traveling this week.

3. Endless Launch Issue -- Twice now (out of dozens of times) when I've launched IE 5 it has continued to grind away until I've stopped it with a "command-period" keystroke.

4. Endless QT Movie Download Issue -- A reader reported the same issue but got the downloading to stop with a "command-period". I had to close the window and reopen it.

5. Chinese Japanese Characters Issue -- From Kenneth Wedin, "Sadly, I was disappointed to find that IE 5 carries over the very frustrating flaw that plagued earlier versions. It is still unable to display ANY text for a handful of Chinese (both GB- and Big5-encoded) as well as Japanese (JIS and S-JIS) sites, which have never posed any problem for any version of Navigator. A good example is the People's Daily Chinese newspaper. Even with the font preferences properly set to either Beijing or Song, with the Simplified Chinese (GB) character set chosen, no text ever appears. Selecting the same preferences and settings within Netscape Communicator, however, never fails to show a page of text and links that are 'invisible' to IE 4.x and 5."

6. Type 11 Error Quits -- Three so far without releasing the RAM it was using which I have upped to 16 KB.
