Update 2 -- Montgomery County, MD, Replacing 47,000 Macs with PCs

Reader 1 -- "[I've heard the rumor that] Superintendent Weast is joining with John Porter, head of the MCPS Department of Global Access technology, to push ahead a plan whereby all of the Macintoshes in the school system will be replaced by PC's. This includes every elementary school, all but two middle schools, and 30-50% of each high school. The rumor goes on to say that this is so that SIS, the Student Inventory System, which was recently put on hold for a year or so, would work. The cost to the county for the lease of these PC's is estimated at $23 million per year, which does not include the cost of software, training, or transition.

At a meeting on Friday [6/2], John Porter told a group of network and computer support folks at CESC that "He already had four councilmen in his pocket with this."

Reader 2 -- "Here's what one of my contacts at MCPS told me re: your Mac stories. [I] did not like what I heard but [I'm]not entirely sure WHAT it means.
