Follow Up--Montgomery County Public Schools Going Dark

We know that this has been and still is happening all over the country but we have selected this school system as one for continuing scrutiny for a number of reasons.

Last Friday (2/2) we received a communication from Mr. John Burke, Director of the Division of Information Services, Office of Global Access Technology of the MCPS stating that we would get a response to our early December letter "...within the next couple of days." We still do not have the response but it could be in the mail.

While MCPS is working on a response to out letter, OGAT has purchased a $2000 Wintel notebook for each of the counselors whether they needed/wanted it or not according to a reliable Macs Only! source. We posted a note on December 22 that though the Michigan Teacher Technology Initiative, school officials will be able to get an iBook for $1200 or $1779. There is no reason why MCPS couldn't have negotiated a similar deal, got better portable computers and saved the MC taxpayer some $221 to $800 per unit.
