Mac OS X 10.0.1--How Fast is It?
We timed a number of application launches (Classic, Carbon and Cocoa) on our 450 MHz G4 Cube with the original 10.0 release and the 10.0.1 update. We had already applied the "sudo update_prebinding -root /" command to the original Mac OS X 10.0 installation which had already sped up application launches perceptibly. Here are the resulting launch times in seconds:
| Application | X 10.0 | X 10.0.1 |
|---|---|---|
| Netscape 4.77 |
| Word 2001 |
| IE 5.1 |
| OmniWeb 4.0cf3 |
| System Preferences |
While generally faster at these application launches, the v10.0.1 update is at best only a split second faster than 10.0 is after applying the prebinding command. Still, we get a distinct impression that the Finder is more crisp after the update.
