Mac OS X on Legacy (Unsupported) Macs
OWC is sponsoring Ryan Rempel's "OS X for Legacy Macs". Ryan's web site provides a utility for easily installing Mac OS X from its CD on legacy Power Macs. "The unsupported machines that work now are the 7300, 7500, 7600, 8500, 8600, 9500 and 9600, as well the clones that were based on one of these systems (the Umax S900 and J700, and the Power Computing PowerWave and PowerTowerPro)." There is also a utility for enabling the backside cache of legacy Macs upgraded with G3 and G4 CPU upgrade cards. We downloaded the installer and successfully installed Mac OS X 10.0.3 on our Power Mac 8500 upgraded with a PowerLogix 250 MHz 604e CPU. We are also going to install Mac OS X on our Power Mac 7300 upgraded with an XLR8 400 MHz G3 ZIF/Carrier card and run some benchmarks in Mac OS X against our 400 MHz PowerBook 2000, 450 MHz G4 Cube and Power Mac 533DP.
