Netscape 6.2 is Out

We installed and used Netscape 6.2 for X for several hours last evening. Netscape now has a usable browser for Mac OS X and it is a good one. It seemed fast, the emailer worked well and it didn't crash once in our limited testing.

"I have now downloaded and am up and running with NS 6.2 on Mac OS 8.x+.
The two installers are different. With the Mac OS X version you get a Netscape folder on the desktop - if that's your download destination location as it is mine. Open the folder, double click on the browser and you're up and running. Keep the icon in the Dock and put the file wherever.
The Mac OS 8.x+ installer works differently. You download a stub installer. Based on whether you want a Custom or Recommended installation, it retrieves the needed files and then installs them. Incidentally, I kept getting a message from the installer that it was recommended that you quit all open application.. I had already quit everything I thought - ah ha, except the Netscape browser I downloaded the stub installer with. Close that and the installer proceeds. Ultimately you get a Netscape file and an alias icon on the desktop.
The neat thing about these browsers is that they both use the same user file in which not only preferences are kept, but also bookmarks and mail. Mozilla reads the same user file, too. So, regardless of whether you're in Mac OS, Classic or Mac OS X you can use your personalized Netscape 6 or Mozilla with all your files intact and up to date.
