File joining should be faster under Mac OS 9 and higher (MP optimizations) Carbonized. Because of the carbonization, Speed Download now requires CarbonLib 1.2.5 or higher, which in turn requires Mac OS 8.6. Although this version of Speed Download is carbonized, it has not been tested under Mac OS X because my Mac cannot run OS X. Your feedback is vital for work under OS X. [9:00p 3/24] Follow Up--Firmware Update Issues: We've spent much of the day dealing with the aftermath of the firmware update on our PowerBook 2000 (Pismo). While all went smoothly as we posted earlier, the update of our Pismo has been problematic. First, we lost use of our 256 MB RAM chip in the Pismo's upper slot. The Pismo now just fails to "see" it. Several calls to Apple Tech Support all resulted in the declaration that the RAM, a 2-2-2 speed chip from MemoryX, is out of spec despite it working fine since last July. Fortunately, MemoryX has agreed to exchange it but a week or more will be lost in the process. Second, we've had increased instabilities that two clean installs of Mac OS 9.1 have failed to quell and latencies in screen redraws. Hopefully, they result from a low memory situation caused by using Mac OS 9.1 with only 64 MB of RAM and will disappear with the new RAM.

[9:00p 3/24] Follow Up--Mac OS X: The Apple Store failed to get our retail version of Mac OS X to us today despite an upgrade to Saturday Delivery and a very early charge to our credit card. Fortunately, we have access to the final developer version which Apple states is the same as the retail release. [Dana Baggett] We've spent the rest of the day installing it on a G4 Cube and a Power Mac G4 533 DP and running some benchmarks of Mac OS X's Classic mode versus Mac OS 9.1. We hope to get our report up later tonight or tomorrow.

We also tried to install Mac OS X on a Power Mac 7300 (400 MHz G3 Upgrade), Power Mac 8500 and Blue & White G3 450 without success. Mac OS X just refused to install on the two older Power Macs no matter what we tried. The Blue & White G3 has a 3dfx Voodoo5 graphics card which is probably the reason for a freeze during start up with the Mac OS X CD.

[9:00p 3/24] WAP Mac OS X Party: Dave Ottalini, a Washington Apple Pi Vice president, sent these photos of the WAP Mac OS X party that I missed. Some 300 WAP members showed up for the Mac OS X presentation by Apple's Senior Engineer, JD Mankowski, and installtion of Mac OS X.
