CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive Upgrade for Apple iBooks

MCE Technologies is now offering an internal CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive designed to replace the original CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, or CD-RW optical drive currently inside Apple iBook systems (Dual USB, 12” and 14”). The MCE CD-RW/DVD Combo Drive, which must be installed by MCE Technologies, gives iBook owners the ability to not only read CD’s and play DVD’s, but also to write to CD-R and CD-RW media, all from within their iBook. The MCE iBook Combo Drive Upgrade Service is priced at $249 and is available immediately.

I'm impressed. It is ultra quiet. No drivers needed for Mac OS X. It came right up on the desktop as a firewire hard drive. Ready to go with Mac OS X 10.1.3 and higher or Mac OS 8.6 and higher (the latter needing drivers). Hard Disk SpeedTools CD provided for OS below Mac OS X. Fully supported by Retrospect and Retrospect Express. I immediately backed up my entire hard drive. Took about half an hour for backup and comparison check. Speeds of up to 227MB/min copying and over 323 MB/min when comparing. Awfully fast. Not bad for a net of $99.99 after $30 rebate plus $6 shipping. And, it has a CompactFlash reader/writer port."
