Diskwarrior

by Alsoft is the only disk repair/maintenance utility that most people will ever need. It optimizes and rebuilds a drive/partition's directory from scratch and replaces the old one. Disk related problems almost always involve some corruption of the directory. We got a chance to talk to Al Whipple, founder of Alsoft, who said that they will be coming out with a version of Diskwarrior (DW) that runs under Mac OS X. DW runs fine under Mac OS 9, even for volumes that have Mac OS X installed, but it takes a reboot into OS 9 to do it. The new version will avoid the reboot. Al said that it has the same functionally as the previous version but with an Aqua interface and the lack of a reboot into 9. He also mentioned that doing a Mac OS X version wasn't easy. Alsoft was only able to carry forward some 10% of its code because I/O and device detection are radically different in Mac OS X. The new version will come out at the end of August, right after Mac OS X 10.2 on August 24th. There will be an upgrade price for current version owners.
