Hands-on Report--Retrospect 5.0.205
"I had a good experience w/ Retrospect 5.0.205 yesterday that may be of interest to our readers.
"Fortunately, before I installed Mac OS X in March of 2001 I backed up my iMac hard drive using Retrospect 4.3 running Mac OS 9.1. Later in the Spring the iMac hard drive crashed. AppleCare replaced the 6 GB drive (with a 10 GB one) and my Apple certified service center technican was able to restore some data files. When I've needed other ones, I've been easily able to retrieve them from my backup set of LS-120 SuperDisks and put them onto the new iMac hard drive running Mac OS 9.2.2.
"This time I decided to put a folder from the iMac backup set onto my Cube running Mac OS X using Retrospect 5.0.205. These files were created in AppleWorks 6 on Mac OS 9. Could I place them on a different computer running a new operating system using a new version of Retrospect and read the files with a newer version of AppleWorks?
"The answer, boys and girls, is yes. Easily done.
"First, I had Retrospect 5.0.205 create a new index of the BackUp Set (11 LS-120 disks) on the Cube hard drive on Mac OS X. (I have both Mac OS X and Mac OS 9.2.2 on the same partition.) Then using the new index, I found the folder I needed and asked Retrospect to recreate it in Mac OS X. It did so easily. Then I opened the files I wanted - also easily. No message about older version, translation, warnings, etc. I then printed the file w/o problem.
"Oh, by the way. The BackUp Set was made on an Imation LS 120 USB SuperDrive running on Mac OS 9. The disks were read by a newer Que! LS-240/120 USB SuperDrive running in Mac OS X.
"Just another no-problem day in the life of a Mac user. (Yawn.)"
