[Updated] Sonnet Sells 466 MHz G3 CPUs as 500 MHz G3 Upgrades according to the retailer OWC as reported yesterday on Accelerate Your Mac and MacCentral. Sonnet also apparently sold chips marked 333 MHz as 450 MHz CPUs. OWC announced that they were no longer selling the improperly marked Sonnet G3 upgrades. According to Sonnet, they got a deal on these chips from IBM to pass on to consumers and they run fine for a variety of reasons at the speeds sold. This may be so. But even giving Sonnet the benefit of any doubt, consumers should have been informed and allowed to decide if they wanted improperly marked CPU upgrades for a lower price than ones properly marked. [Update: Sonnet posted a FAQ on the issue.]
