[Update 10a ET 1/4] Maine Education iBook Program Expands to Home Internet Connections. As we first reported, the State of Maine has contracted with Apple to provide some 33,000 iBooks for all 7th and 8th graders and their teachers. The deal also includes wireless networking via AirPort in all schools plus support and training. Now the program is expanding to provide at least 5000 students with free home internet access according to this Portland Press Herald article. Free home internet access is being provided through donations in cash and in-kind services. The pool stands at $850,000 with Gov. King kicking in $100,000 himself. [Dana Baggett]

[Update 4p ET 1/3] The Apple Developer Connection Publishes Windows Win32 API to Mac OS X Porting Guide: From Apple, "The Apple Developer Connection (ADC) has published a Win32-to-Mac OS X Porting Guide for Windows developers to port their existing C or C++ applications to Mac OS X. The guide introduces Windows programmers to the Mac OS X procedural APIs for key areas such as 2D and 3D graphics, user interface, text handling, networking and multiprocessing. It also directs readers to additional resources on the ADC Website, in third-party books, and other web sites."
[Update 10a ET 1/3] IBM ViaVoice for X v3.0.2 Updater is available for download from IBM. Version 3.0.2 provides ViaVoice support for Mac OS X version 10.2.2 according to IBM. It is designed to provide clearer dictation and playback with Mac OS X version 10.2.2. We hope this also applies to 10.2.3. The following files and corresponding fixes are included in this update:
audcore.so - Fixed issue related to audio quality at 22kHz, by recording at 44kHz. This improves recognition accuracy as well as text playback in 10.2.2. Note : Applies to VV3 and Simply Dictation running under Mac OS 10.2.2
Speakpad - Fixed issue related to Analyzing Docs when Saving: SetupAssistant failed to display the Found New Words Training window and instead a message was displayed saying that SetupAssistant did not launch. Note : Applies to VV3 and Simply Dictation running under Mac OS 10.2.2
IEControler - Fixed issue related to long VC launch times caused by excessive IE favorite websites. Fix will now limit the number of "Jump-To-s" to 100. Note : Applies to VV3 and Simply Dictation running under Mac OS 10.2.2
[Update 8:30a ET 1/3] Sync Your Newton--NewtSync 0.3 is Out and available for download via MacUpdate.com. "NewtSync allows you to start synchronizing your Newton and your Jaguar applications. It supports both serial and TCP/IP connections. Developers can write plug-ins to synchronize with other applications. Out of the box, it will support synchronization to the AddressBook and iCal applications. It's a Cocoa application, so when you develop plug-ins (known in Cocoa circles as bundles) you can access your Newton as a Cocoa object." [Dana Baggett]
[Update 9:30a ET 1/2] Apple Released iCal 1.0.1 and iSync 1.0 today. The new "digital hub" application versions are availalble for download from the iCal web page and the iSync web page. Mac OS X 10.2.2 is required for iCal 1.0.1 and it will not work with the public preview version of iSync. 10.2.2 and iCal 1.0.1 are required for iSync 1.0.
According to Apple, iCal 1.0.1 provides a number of performance and stability enhancements, and improved support for importing vCal and Entourage information.
iSync 1.0 is the finished release version. Sync'ing with Palm devices is faster and configuration is improved. There is a menu bar icon for sync'ing at any time. Sync'ing with .Mac is automatic and with the .Mac Address Book has been added. Finally, Apple claims enhanced performance and stability. The web site lists currently compatible mobile phones and PDAs.
Here is Apple's press release. We have routinely used the previous versions of both applications with no problems.
