Mac OS X 10.3 (Panther) Troubleshooting Solutions

We have now installed Panther on a large number of Macs and they are amazingly trouble-free. Most are fairly recent Macs, of course, since Panther will not install on a Mac that did not come with USB ports. The oldest is an original white iBook 500 MHz Dual USB. They do not have older or third party graphics cards nor FireWire 800 drives, both of which can experience problems with Panther. The problems we encountered were very few:

1. Installer Quits During Disc 2 with Errors Message. We discovered this happens when the installer tries to install iTunes 4.0.1 if the user has already previously installed iTunes 4.1.

  • Solution: Sometimes Disc 2 can be reinserted and the .pkg file clicked to install the items from Disc 2. Other times we had to use Custom Install in Disc 2 and uncheck iTunes. Other times we had to delete iTunes 4.1 and then install Disc 2.

2. After Installing Panther, Finder Unexpectedly Quits and Launches Over and Over Again.
