Macworld Keynote Report 2

Yesterday (see below), we covered the new product announcements. Today, we finish up our report with the other items mentioned during Steve Jobs keynote address.

He mentioned that the Switcher campaign has neen successful in attracting the attention of Windows users, citing the statistics that there have been 7.8 million unique visits to Apple's Switcher web page and 68 per cent of them were running Windows.

The first Apple retail stores opened only 20 months ago and now there are 51. 85 million people now live within 15 miles of an Apple Store. For the quarter ending in December, they brought in $148 million in revenue with 50 per cent of sales going to Windows users. There were 1.4 million visitors to Apple Stores in December, roughly equivalent to the attendance of 20 Macworld Expos.

Two special application deals have been extended to March 31st. First, the free Mac OS X giveaway "X for Teachers" has gone to 290,000 teachers. The second is the $199 deal for Microsoft Office v.X when bought with a Mac.

iCal and iSync were updated last week. There have been 1.4 million iCal downloads. Sites like iCalShare.com have over 150 calendars that can be subscribed to. Steve Jobs said there would be more about these two applications later this year.

The iPod has been out for 14 months and over 600,000 have been sold. It is the number one MP3 player in the U.S. and Japan, where the iPod has a 42 per cent market share. Jobs showed off a $499 Burton snowboarding jacket with an iPod pouch, headphone channel and controls built into the sleeve. It is an Apple Store exclusive this year.

Apple reached its goal of 5 million Mac OS X users by the end of 2002. The goal for 2003 is 9-10 million users. There are over 5000 applications for Mac OS X, with only one significant laggard, Jobs mentioned as the audience laughed. He was referring to Quark Express. One app highlight was DigiDesign's audio application Pro Tools 6.0 for Mac OS X which will ship this month starting at $495. It was demoed.
