Who's on first.

When we noted the software in our Macworld report, reader Tony Wright pointed out that FWB's BackUp Toolkit it is actually Tri-edre's Tri-BACKUP 3 under license. Indeed, the license is noted in BackUp Toolkit's "About" window. Curiously, Tri-edre's web site lists Prosoft Engineering, not FWB, as their US distributor. Prosoft's backup product is called Data Backup v1.0.1. Tri-edre's and Prosoft's versions cost $49, a tad cheaper. [Update: According to a 3-3-03 email from Sherri Jessen of Prosoft Engineering, "Prosoft Engineering is in fact the licensed owner of Tri-Backup 3. Tri-edre pulled the contract away from FWB and gave it to Prosoft Engineering. At the end of April, FWB will no longer be selling the product. Prosoft Engineering, however, is and will continue to sell their Data Backup product."--Ed.]

Tri-edre's web site lists v3.16 as the latest version of Tri-BACKUP. FWB's web site lists nothing more recent than the v3.12 that we got in early January. We have been using it without a problem since then. When we downloaded Tri-BACKUP v3.16 from Tri-edre we were pleasantly surprised to find that our FWB BackUp Toolkit serial number worked with it. Except for the name and main interface window, the two appear to be identical. This review is based in v3.12 but we will switch to Tri-BACKUP v3.1.6 which has a couple of new features and will report on it in a later update.
